The executive council shall appoint, subject to tribal council confirmation, a traditional culture committee to manage the traditional culture department and upon accepting the positions, all traditional culture committee’s are required to take the tribal oath of office before the tribal council.

(1) The committee shall consist of three members, one of which shall always be a tribal council member and all are subject to the following qualifications.

(A) Be a current member of the Cowlitz Indian Tribe with high moral character.

(B) Be at least 35 years of age.

(C) Possess at least a high school diploma or its equivalency.

(D) Be able to demonstrate a working knowledge the Cowlitz Tribal Code.

(2) The original committee shall consist of three appointed members, a tribal council member for a one year term, who shall serve as the committee’s chair during the first year of the committee, one for a two year term, who shall serve as chair during the second year of the committee and one for a three year term, who shall serve as chair during the third year of the committee.

(3) Subsequent members shall serve three-year terms.

(A) The member serving the third year of their current appointment shall be chair.

(B) In the event of the death, removal or resignation of a member, the tribal council shall fill the vacated seat with a qualified appointee, who shall serve for the remainder of the vacated term.

(a) If the seat that is vacated was the current chair, the member currently in their second year of service shall become chair for the remainder of the current year.

(b) If the seat that is vacated was in the second year of service, the newly appointed member shall serve as chair during the following year.
